This scholarship was established for students wishing to enter the field of education. and is named after a woman who began imparting knowledge to local youngsters in 1917 and continued in that endeavor until her retirement in 1965, some 47 years later. Rebecca Choate attended Appalachian Training School (later to become Appalachian State University) and Women’s College in Greensboro ( later to become UNC-Greensboro). Her biggest contribution can be summed up by the comments of a former student and local pharmacist, Tom Burgiss on July 9th, 1965. Burgiss stated on the occasion of her retirement, “You have taught my mother, my sister, my wife, my mother-in-law, and myself. My only regret is that you will not teach my sons.”
