Keiger, J. Lee, Jr. Family

This scholarship is given in honor of the contributions of Elizabeth James, Mrs. Martha Keigers’s mother. Elizabeth James served her community in an exponential manner. As the founder of the Friendship House in Winston-Salem, James helped thousands of women as they struggled with alcoholism. She offered them a home and support at a time in their lives they needed both. One of her expressions, “You have to build good habits to get rid of the bad ones,” is one that kept Friendship House going since its inception in 1950. The residents of the house have never had anything but admiration for Elizabeth James and her significance in their lives. This scholarship recognizes such commitment to community and kindness in others.
