This scholarship is in honor of Patyrae Reeves Busic, who was born and raised in Alleghany County. Her parents were farmers. Mrs. Busic attended elementary school at Toliver, a one-room schoolhouse located in the Twin Oaks community, and graduated from Sparta High School. Her dream was to become a teacher. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College and enjoyed a 34-year teaching career in the Alleghany County School System., teaching several generations of students. At one time in her career, she stated both bosses, the superintendent of school and principal had been her students. She was a big fan of ASU football. This scholarship is in conjunction with the Alleghany VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. This scholarship is intended to assist a student desiring to become a teacher and realize their dream just as Mrs. Busic did.
